Day 162 of 365 Things To Do In Roseville CA – Crush 29

Day 162 of 365… If you are looking for an elegant dining experience, try Crush 29 at 1480 Eureka Road. It’s really beautiful from its oversized doors to its wine barreled booths. It’s open for lunch and dinner, and if you want to impress a client, this is the place to go.

They say they incorporate more than 9200+ square feet of Napa Valley’s unique design influence and truly mimics the wine country dining experience.

To be honest, I haven’t been to the wine country that often, but Crush 29 does look like it is decorated around the essence of great wines. There are many beautiful wine country murals on stone wall interiors. It also has many fireplaces with a couple of wine tasting “caves.” They offer 220 wines with over 70 selections by the glass, so the patrons have quite a decision to make before ordering the perfect wine for their dinner.

Did I tell you about the round bar with a drop ceiling covered with small shiny tiles? It’s elegant. I know I used that word before, but it’s the best name for this restaurant.

I thought about the name “Crush 29” and I think it is very cleaver. The 29 stands for the highway running through the Napa Valley, and I think the crush stands for the sound of the grapes being crushed on their journey to become a fine wine. That sounds good to me anyway.

There menu has many unique items. For an appetizer you can try the Grilled Artichoke for $8.75 or the Dungeness Crab Rangoons for $10.55. There are many soups and salads to choose from. soups are $6.95 and salads are around $9.00.

There are specialties on the menu like Brandy Steak for $16.95 or Snap Crackle Salmon for $14.95. You can always get a sandwich, burger or pizza (lunch items) in the $13.00 range.

You can get a complete menu if you go on-line. Or better yet, give Crush 29 a try. It is one of the “hot” spots in Roseville. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience.

Day 161 of 365 Things To Do In Roseville CA – Turkey Trot

I can’t think of a better thing to do on Thanksgiving morning (November 25th) than to go on a 5K or 10K run/walk. Roseville is having such an event called “The Turkey Trot” at Maidu Park.  The 10K starts at 9:00 a.m. and the 5K starts at 9:10 a.m.

The cost for adults is $35.00 to 11/19/10 after that it’s $40.00. Children 15 and under cost $25 to 11/19/10 and after that it’s $30.00. The final day to register is November 23rd at 11:50 p.m.

Long Sleeve Hanes Beefy T Cotton shirts will be given 5k and 10K runners/walkers who register early. Late registrants are not guaranteed a shirt.

After you register, you can pick up your racing packets at the New Balance Shoe Store 1198 Roseville Parkway, but call them first at 773-7463 to be sure the packets are ready. (It makes check-in a lot faster if you have your packets with you. Check-in lines can be very long.)

Awards will be given to the top three athletes in 1-11, 12-14, 15-17, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69. 70+.  Post race refreshments will be included for all participants.

Award ceremonies and great raffle giveaways will follow the event.

Here’s the best part… the proceeds from the race will benefit the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Everyone is asked to bring at least one can of non-perishable food for their food locker. All food and money will be distributed locally.

It sounds like a great event, and there will be plenty of time to get home and start the turkey.

If you have questions call 775-232-7933.

Day 160 of 365 Things To Do In Roseville CA – Johnson Ranch

Day 160 of 365… I once heard Johnson Ranch described as, “Like driving down Main Street U.S.A. in Disneyland.” Actually, that’s a good description of the area. What makes the area so pretty is the generously landscaped areas that run along the sides and in the medians of major streets. Lots of trees, shrubs and flowers create a very peaceful feeling.

Are you wondering if there really was a Johnson who had a ranch? Yes there was.

In 1919, William H. Johnson bought the first section of his ranch that would eventually equal 2000 acres. In its hey-day, the ranch stretched from the Harding Blvd. area to Sierra College Blvd. The ranch was predominately used to raise sheep (about 1500 ewes at a time) although many cattle grazed the land as well.

A few years ago I spoke to Cliff Johnson who was William’s son. He said his family came to this great area and never left. “I guess we thought if we wandered too far away we might get lost,” he chuckled.

Coker-Ewing and the Southfork Partnership bought the land in the early 70’s. They developed it into a series of custom homes neighborhoods, many of them in gated communities. I think Mr. William Johnson would be very proud of how his land has been developed.

Day 159 of 365 Things To Do In Roseville CA – Santa Claws

Day 159 of 365… It’s not too early to be thinking about Christmas cards. The personalized ones with a family photo are the best kind to give out. Since your dog and your cat are part of the family he/she needs to be in the photo too.

The SPCA will be having photo ops with “Santa Claws” on both Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Santa Claws will be at their location at 150 Corporation Yard Road. Different photo packages and rates will be available.

Be sure your dog is on a leash, and your cat in a carrier. That’s right, you can bring your kitty to the event too.

All proceeds benefit the Placer SPCA. No appointment necessary. Call 782-7722 x 102 if you would like more information.

Thanksgiving

In all the Christmas activities, don’t forget Thanksgiving on November 25th. I always think it is the forgotten holiday. I was in a grocery store last week, and they had Christmas stuff everywhere. The only things they had for Thanksgiving were  aluminum roasting pans.

If I find any Thanksgiving activities I’ll let you know. Likewise, if you know of something, leave me a comment.

Day 158 of 365 Things To Do In Roseville CA – New Balance – Get Fit Weekend

Day 158 of 365… If you feel like a walk this weekend, you should join in the New Balance events.

From 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday there are two walks and one bike ride events. (Events take place both days.) The starting point is the New Balance Shoe Store at 1198 Roseville Parkway. All events are free.

The hosts club for the weekend is Sacramento Walking Sticks.

Walk 5K-10K – Roaming Roseville

This walk introduces you to the Roseville Fountains Shopping Center area and its adjoining neighborhood through parks, wetlands and homes surrounding two golf courses. This walk is ideal for families with children due to the family friendly areas.

Walk 7K, 10K, 12K – Roseville To Rocklin Romp

This walk (7, 10 and 12K+) goes along the Antelope Creek wetlands bike trail, through neighborhoods adjoining the creek and connecting to the stellar Rocklin Johnson-Springview Park set on 90 acres of open space and home to the Rocklin Community Center, Picnic Pavilion and Rocklin Branch Library.

Bike – 25K – Roaming Roseville On Your Bike

The 25K bike ride will dazzle you with the hidden bike trails in the Roseville area that takes you from the Antelope Creek wetlands through Miner’s and Secret Ravine bike routes, which takes in Roseville’s Sculpture Park.

There was also an indoor Mall walk scheduled, but I don’t know if that one will still be happening.

Take the trips one day or both, as I said the cost is free! Go with your family or friends, it should be fun.

Day 157 of 365 Things To Do In Roseville CA – Whole Foods

Day 157 of 365… Last week I was going to lunch with a friend, and we couldn’t decide where to go. She was on a special diet. She could only have certain food on certain days, and Wednesday was fruit day. All she could eat was fruit all day long. She could have as much fruit as she wanted though.

I didn’t want to persuade her to go off her diet, because she had lost 14 pounds in 6 weeks, and she was very excited about the plan.

She suggested we meet at Whole Foods. It was a great idea, because it was quick and we could both get exactly what we wanted. They have sushi, a gourmet food bar, sandwiches, a soup bar, vegan food, a greens bar and more. Most of the food you put together yourself. It costs $7.99 a pound.

They have a covered patio with lots of tables; it was great. She munched on her melon and I had a salad.

I was curious about Whole Foods, so I got on line to check it out. I found out the first store opened in 1980. Its founders felt the country was ready for a natural food supermarket. At that time there were less than 6 natural food stores in the whole country.

They started in Texas and then moved into Louisiana. As the years went by and they became popular they began buying out other stores. They now have stores across the United States, in Canada and in the United Kingdom.

Their mission is simple. They want to be a grocery store featuring good healthy food; not a health store with pills and potions.

If you go to Whole Foods at time of day you will see their mission was a brilliant one. A steady stream of little green carts are constantly going in and out of the store.

Whole Foods is a great store to go to if you haven’t done so already, and it’s a perfect place to have lunch.

Let me know if you want to more information about my friend’s diet.

Day 156 of 365 Things To Do In Roseville CA – Adam Baquera Park

Day 156 of 365… “No matter how much we grow, it is important that we all stay together. People have to get involved and not lose touch with each other.”

Those words were Adam Baquera’s advice to citizens of Roseville, and it was the belief he modeled his life after. As an active community member, Adam served 15 years on the Roseville Park and Recreation Commission and 20 years on the County Park and Recreation Commission. He was also a long time member of the Sierra Economic Development District,

Adam was a leader in the Hispanic community and was a charter member on the Latin Political and Social Organization.

The public service closest to his heart was the 12 years he served on the Roseville City School Board. “I really felt I made the future better for the children of Roseville,” he said. He was right. I was a member of the Board when Adam was, and he always fought for programs to benefit the students before everyone else.

Adam was a good friend of mine. I always admired him as well as his wife Sara who also gave back to the community as well. She volunteered at the hospital and was President of the Auxiliary.

Adam has a park named after him near Blue Oaks Blvd. There is also a street off Foothills Blvd. that bears his name.

I have written about so many people in Roseville who have contributed to Roseville’s development in a variety of ways. I hope their lives have inspired yours. The Christmas season is coming up, and there are so many ways to give back. I’ll give you ideas if you don’t already know how you can help.

Would you like to spend a few hours ringing the Salvation Army bell? Let me know.

Day 154 of 365 Things To Do In Roseville CA – Lion’s Club Crab Feed

Day 154 of 365… I believe the most popular crab feed in Roseville is the one put on by the Lions Club, and I don’t think this year will be any exception. The event will take place at the Placer County Fair Grounds in the Jones building on November 6th. The cost is $40 per person and you can buy tickets at the door. The doors open at 6:00

They offer a very generous meal of all-you-can-eat salad, bread, clam chowder, pasta and of course crab and shrimp. There are also tables full of delicious cheesecake available at a small cost.

In a time of a challenging economy, the Lion’s crab feed stills packs in people and makes a good profit.

In the past a school group has helped with serving and clean-up. It is usually the Buljan Middle School band who does the job. As a reward for their hard work, a bowl is passed around the group and people put in tips in appreciation.

There is a silent auction and raffle tickets are sold for a drawing at the end of the event. There are lots of prizes for people to win. They have everything from massages, to a tool box to new bicycles. As a tradition, the winners of the bicycles ride their bikes up and down the aisles of on looking crab feeders. Last year my friend won the grand prize which was a flat screen TV.

All the proceeds from the event go to Lions charities.

Day 153 of 365 Things To Do In Roseville CA – “Almost, Maine”

Day 153 of 365… Have you ever been to a high school play? I must admit that I haven’t been, although I do plan on attending Woodcreek High School’s production of “Almost, Maine.”

I don’t know if you’ve been to Woodcreek lately, but their stage looks professional and I’ve been told that the quality of their performances is profession as well.

The synopsis of “Almost, Maine” is that it takes place in a fictional town located far north in the state of Maine. The scenes take place on a cold winter night, under the Aurora Borealis. The play addresses all types of relationships such as “love at first sight”, “marriage”, “becoming more than friends” and many more.

The romantic comedy is a new play written by John Cariani. The performances will be Nov, 4, 5 and 6th as well as the 11, 12 and13th. Woodcreek is located at 2551 Woodcreek Oaks Blvd. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the play starts at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets will be available for purchase at the door. The prices are Students/Senior Citizens $6.00 and $10.00 for adults. For more information call 916-771-6565 x 4228.
